Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. While she was a small girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessive compulsive disorder. She also experienced anxiety due to the word association. Ford became fascinated by acting during her teenaged years, she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she would not be a good choice for this school. Ford made an application at the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured the position she wanted on her third try. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor was later to play frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut when she appeared on Surgical Spirit in an episode in the year 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate was on television in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Her regular work in theatre led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy that she started adding to her show in 1996, quickly gained her attention.
